Water Safety: 8 tips for a safer summer

8 tips for a safer summer

Daniel and Benjamin, like most children are drawn to water. Especially Benjamin who has an annoying fascination with touching the toilet water, EWWWWW!

Like most, when it starts getting closer to summer we begin to introduce our children to swimming and waterplay. Unfortunately, each year someones child drowns or gets into trouble. Two years ago I actually had to rescuing a boy from drowning at our local pools. The boy was fine but I was suprised that the parents were actually busy having coffee át the time. I am sure they are great parents but ever since I think about our kids and water safety.

  1. If you let your kids to to a friends house this summer, ask the parents if they have a pool and if they do find out if the children are monitored or not. Or if your child can't swim, ask if they have a gate and advise the host parent that your boy/girl cannot swim yet.
  2. If you are able to start swimming lessons this summer
  3. If you have a pool make sure you learn CPR in case of an emergency.
  4. Do not leave floating object after you have finished swimming. it invites young minds.
  5. If you use waterplay buckets then ensure you empty them once you have finished
  6. Never leave a bath full of water
  7. If you have an inflatable pool and young toddlers, fill to knee height. Kids don't need lots of water to play in if they can't swim. An always make sure you are watching.
  8. When you go to the beach, swim between the flags.
