Although my son is beaming with a smile while in hospital, this accident could have happen to anyone and unfortunately his injury resulted in plastic surgery.
Daniel like any boy his age likes to play with and near doors. On this particular day he was blocking a door while another child slammed the door shut. When he recovered his finger from the door it was partially amputated around the middle of the nail bed. He was in extreme pain and totally distressed at the look of his mangled finger, so were his friends, so we quickly rushed him off to hospital. On arrival we were immediately transferred into the Emergency Room. After an x-ray we discovered that the bone in his finger was also broken, exposing him to infection so to prevent this and re-attach his finger he was operated on. As you can imagine, this is not something that I thought would ever happen to my son, which brings me talk about door safety.
In this case the door was a solid glass door that had no gas struts and/or door safety stoppers, to prevent injury. Even as parents, it's all to easy to be a bit oblivious about dangers around the community and our home but I can not stress enough the importance of door stops at home.
Door stops require no installation, it is simply a peice of rubber or foam cut into a semi circle that is place near the top of the doors edge. They prevent the door from slamming shut and may just save you and your little ones a trip to the hospital.
If you kids have had an injury please email me your story.
